Migration and tourism statistics, also known as the travelling residents and visitors statistics, reports the number of travelling residents and visitors and the purpose of their travel.

Key findings

  1. Visitor movements have nearly returned to pre‑pandemic levels by 2024, rising from 3,932 in 2022 to 9,445 in 2023 and 12,418 in 2024.
  2. Tourism is the primary engine of recovery, with visitor spending surging from $2.25m in 2022 to $9.96m in 2024.
  3. Net migration shifted sharply negative in 2024, falling to –426, compared with +138 in 2023 and +128 in 2022.
  4. Air New Zealand remains the dominant carrier, accounting for 93.7% of all arrivals in 2024 (11,636 passengers). However, yacht activity now represents the majority of total movement counts, with 630 yacht arrivals (5.1%) and 154 yacht movements, making up 61.8% of all arrival movements.
  5. Seasonality has intensified, with 2024 delivering record monthly peaks. Visitor arrivals from July to September consistently exceeded 1,400, culminating in September’s high of 1,704 arrivals, the strongest monthly performance on record.
